Las Juntas - Playfield Renovation
September 10, 2018
Martinez Unified School District administrators, Board members, and bond team were honored to host East Bay Regional Park District's director, Colin Coffey and Contra Costa County Supervisor, Federal Glover for a ribbon cutting ceremony. The Las Juntas students and principal were on hand to cut the ribbon and christen their new facility.
The intent of the Las Juntas Playfield Renovation Project was to create an engaging and functional outdoor space for the students and staff of Las Juntas to enjoy during school, as well as the neighboring community during non-school hours. Project details include a new natural grass field surrounded by an asphalt track and built-in par course.
At the June 22, 2015 Board Meeting, the Board approved sending a letter to Contra Costa County Supervisor Federal Glover requesting that the Las Juntas Elementary Playfield Project be submitted to the list of projects being submitted to the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) to receive a grant from the Measure WW Program. At the August 8, 2016 MUSD Board Meeting, staff presented an update regarding Measure WW which included the agreement process, terms and conditions from the EPRPD. District’s counsel negotiated the terms of the joint-use agreement with the County and EBRPD. The agreement was finalized by all parties and was approved at the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors Meeting and approved by the MUSD Board of Education on March 27, 2017.
After the joint use agreement was approved, MUSD identified supplemental funding from the Contra Costa County Department of Conservation and Development. The required planning costs came out of a MUSD restricted facilities fund and due to the contractor bids coming in higher than anticipated, the Board of Education approved the overage to be funded by Measure K.
